Welcome to our new Monday morning feature, the Monday News Round-up. We’ll start off each week by taking a quick look at a few stories pertinent to the industry. Each story is followed by a brief thought on the news item.

Greece Tightens Regulations on Short-Term Rentals, Sparking Controversy
This one surprised me. I was expecting the standard story of severe limitations proposed on rentals. However, unless there is more to the story, the proposed regulations look pretty reasonable. Included provisions include mandatory smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, required pest control, and the property must be zoned residential. Never the less, it is causing controversy among owners and guests.
The Wild Story of Mike Lynch’s Rise From Janitor to Tech Billionaire
This is a little different. First this is a link to a podcast. Second, it has minimal relation to short term rentals. The only connection is a story at the beginning. In that story, one of the hosts checks the Ring camera on his father’s AirBNB. He sees armed guards posted outside. It’s a crazy little tale that made me think about what I would do. We have to be ready to handle unusual situations, but I wouldn’t have seen this one coming.
Hostaway releases 2024 STR Market Report findings
In a follow up to last week’s story looking at AirDNA’s analysis of the American market, we’re looking at Hostaway’s analysis of the Canadian market. Not surprisingly, our neighbors to the north have familiar concerns when surveyed about the state of the industry. Headaches regarding scaling was at the top Concerns with extreme weather surged in this year’s survey, again sadly familiar. Interestingly, economic volatility dropped significantly as a concern.
That does it for this week. If there’s anything you would like to see covered here, drop it in the comments or email it to roger@myccvrs.com.
